Top Ten Horses - TTF Jumps 2008/09

Madison du Berlais

Madison du Berlais (151 pts)

analysis / prospects
Tough 3m chaser who had a wonderful season in 08/09, winning the Hennessy at Newbury and rescheduled Aon at Kempton. Best suited to flat tracks and small fields, but will probably struggle to reach the dizzy heights of 151 TTF points this season.

Big Buck's

Big Buck's (127 pts)

analysis / prospects
Progressed into the champion staying hurdler of last year - winning the World Hurdle at Cheltenham, despite having started off over fences. In all of his victories, it never quite looked like he'd reached maximum effort, suggesting that we'll see improved efforts this season. Looks very hard to oppose in his division, now that Punchestowns will go chasing.

Imperial Commander

Imperial Commander (114 pts)

analysis / prospects
Held in the highest regard by his trainer; won last season's Paddy Power before following up at the Festival in the Ryanair Chase - after some mixed efforts in between. Looks a leading player for graded 2m4f races. Serious doubts remain over his ability to see out 3m.

Kauto Star

Kauto Star (100 pts)

analysis / prospects
One of the true National Hunt greats - won last season's Gold Cup with complete authority, regaining his 2007 crown by beating a below-par Denman by 14 lengths. Before that, won his third King George in imperious fashion. Will be targeting a fourth Boxing Day title, and will then be kept fresh for Cheltenham in his bid to win the blue riband for the third time. A must-have.

Master Minded

Master Minded (100 pts)

analysis / prospects
Dual Champion Chaser who has looked almost unbeatable over 2m in the last two seasons. Possesses tremendous speed and is an extremely sound jumper; hard to see anything that will challenge him in his bid for a third Champion Chase success. However, some have expressed doubts about whether he has already peaked, despite him being a mere six-year-old.

Punjabi

Punjabi (97 pts)

analysis / prospects
Admirable six year-old who won last season's Champion Hurdle in gritty fashion, fending off Celestial Halo and Binocular. Before that, he'd won the Fighting Fifth and was in the process of running a big race in Kempton's Christmas Hurdle before uncharacteristically crashing out. Probably still underrated, there's no reason to think that he can't play a leading role in this year's Champion.

Cooldine

Cooldine (85 pts)

analysis / prospects
Deeply impressive when taking the RSA Chase at Cheltenham, but subsequently disappointed at Punchestown, where he could finish only fifth as odds-on favourite. Clearly didn't show his true colours that day, and remains an exciting prospect - although taking on Kauto Star, Denman and Notre Pere will be a tough ask.

Nacarat

Nacarat (76 pts)

analysis / prospects
Excelled last season, capturing the Racing Post Chase at Kempton before finishing a credible third to Voy Por Ustedes at Aintree. Loves flat tracks and that Aintree race will surely be on his 2010 agenda - after he's had a crack at Kauto Star in the King George.

Solwhit

Solwhit (76 pts)

analysis / prospects
Exciting young Irish hurdler who bagged two Grade 1 victories last Spring, at Aintree and then Punchestown. Was kept fresh for those wins, having taken the Red Mills at Gowran Park in February. This season may well have a different script, as Cheltenham's Champion Hurdle will surely be the aim - he's another top prospect in a red-hot division.

Lough Derg

Lough Derg (74 pts)

analysis / prospects
If TTF points were based on courage and durability, he would be top of the list every season. Hugely likeable staying hurdler, who runs his heart out in every race - usually carrying welter-burdens in handicaps. One struggles to see him making the top ten scorers for this season's competition.
