Point scoring

Basically, your team of horses need to win as many of the top races as possible, as the more the race is worth in prize money, the more points you'll score.

What's equally important though is to aim to select as many horses that you think will have a chance of scoring in the Bonus Races - where additional points are awarded - so take good note of section 3 below where all the bonus races are listed.

The rules on point scoring are simple:

  1. Selections count when winning National Hunt races under the Rules of Racing in Great Britain or Ireland during the period of the competition, or when runner-up in any of the bonus races contained in section 3.
  2. Winning selections will be awarded points as follows:
     Race Value   Points
Race worth £30,000 or more to the winner 25
Race worth £25,000 and up to £29,999 to the winner 20
Race worth £15,000 and up to £24,999 to the winner 15
Race worth £10,000 and up to £14,999 to the winner 12
Race worth less than £10,000 to the winner 10

Prize-money will be taken as the published racecard penalty value to the winner. For races in Ireland, prize-money in € will be converted to £ at the official BHA conversion rate. The rate for 2009 is €1.03 to £1, subject to change from Jan 1, 2010.
  3. An additional 25pts will also be awarded to the winner and 12pts to the runner-up in the following races:
    • November 14: Paddy Power Gold Cup, Cheltenham
    • November 28: Hennessy Gold Cup, Newbury
    • December 26: William Hill King George VI Chase, Kempton
    • January 24: Irish Champion Hurdle, Leopardstown
    • February 7: Irish Hennessy Gold Cup, Leopardstown
    • February 13: Totesport Trophy, Newbury
    • February 27: Racing Post Chase, Kempton
    • March 16: Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle, Cheltenham
    • March 16: Irish Independent Arkle Chase, Cheltenham
    • March 17: Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase, Cheltenham
    • March 17: RSA Chase, Cheltenham
    • March 18: Ladbrokes World Hurdle, Cheltenham
    • March 18: Ryanair Festival Trophy, Cheltenham
    • March 19: Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, Cheltenham
    • April 10: John Smith's Grand National, Aintree
  4. Any of the above rescheduled to take place outside the dates of the competition will not count.

  5. In the event of a dead-heat, points will be divided by the number of horses dead-heating, with fractions rounded down. No points will be awarded for a walkover. The official result on the day will be used for the calculation of points, with any subsequent disqualifications disregarded.
  6. Bonus points according to the official Tote win dividend odds, including a £1 unit stake, will be awarded to winning selections:

     Win Dividend   Points
     £4 to £7
     over £7 up to £11
     over £11 up to £16 11
     over £16 up to £22 16
     over £22 up to £29 22
     over £29 up to £37 29
     over £37 37

In the event of no Tote win dividend being declared, the starting price will determine any bonus points. Should neither a Tote win dividend nor a starting price be returned, bonus points will not apply.
